The New Collection
Artist Statement – “The Coming Storm”
As an artist based in Yorkshire, The increasing awareness of the emotional undercurrents sweeping across the world today. Although the Shires of Yorkshire currently feel safe, there’s an undeniable sense of looming uncertainty. Walking the moors, with the radar domes of Fylingdales often visible across the bleak, expansive tops, it’s hard not to wonder about the unseen threats and silent tensions building beyond the horizon. There’s a collective unease—a gathering tension that feels like standing beneath a heavy, darkening sky before a storm breaks.
The latest series of oil on canvas paintings, “The Coming Storm,” explores this emotional landscape through the metaphor of the sky. Each painting reflects a different emotional state connected to conflict, war, and global anxiety—fear, defiance, helplessness, anger, hope, and resignation. Skies have always been nature's most honest mood board: shifting from oppressive greys to violent reds, from bruised twilight to sudden, blinding flashes of light.
The series unfolds in three distinct parts:
Part 1: “The Beautiful Threat”
This first chapter explores the deceptive beauty of sunsets and still skies—moments where the world is bathed in warm, golden light but carries with it a heavy heart. It’s about the calm before conflict, when the air feels too still, and colour takes on an uneasy intensity.
Part 2: “The Storm Breaks”
Here, the mood shifts violently. Clouds churn and fragment, light fractures, and the sky becomes chaotic and overwhelming. This is where fear lives—in the noise, the pressure, and the emotional turbulence that feels inescapable.
Part 3: “The New Dawn”
After the storm comes survival. The final chapter reflects a fragile hope—a tentative, pale light breaking through. It’s about what remains after fear, and the slow, cautious return of optimism.
By focusing on landscapes and expansive skies, I aim to strip away the specifics of geography or politics and instead speak to the raw, universal human emotions that conflict stirs—whether you’re directly affected, distantly observing, or simply absorbing the mood that now seems to sit in the air everywhere.
These paintings are not literal depictions of what may be to come. They are emotional weather reports—visual interpretations of internal and external turbulence. They’re rooted partly in my own childhood memories of reading the sky for meaning, and partly in today’s global reality where so many live under storm clouds both real and metaphorical.
The horizon becomes a line of uncertainty. The clouds become expressions of dread, defiance, and fragile hope. This is The Coming Storm.
